When and what date is the US presidential election in 2020?

Four years on from President Trump's momentous election win, Americans are preparing to head to the polls again.

The United States presidential election will see the current president take on former vice president Joe Biden in his battle to remain in the White House.

Donald Trump is confident he can repeat his shock victory of 2016, despite opinions polls putting Mr Biden, who served alongside Barack Obama, in the lead.

Americans across the 50 states will cast their votes on November 3 and a result is expected to be announced on the night.

Although, an increase in postal voting due to the coronavirus pandemic could delay an immediate result.

By law, the date of the US election is always the Tuesday after the first Monday of November.

Presidential elections take place every four years.

The two candidates take part in three televised presidential debates in the lead up to Election Day.

The first debate, moderated by Fox News host Chris Wallace, saw the pair exchange bitter insults in a discussion around the coronavirus pandemic, race and violence, Mr Trump's tax returns and more.

Mr Trump's running mate Mike Pence will also take on Mr Biden's running mate Kamala Harris in a vice presidential debate set for October 7.

The president will keep his post until early next year regardless of the result.

The winner of the 2020 election is then set to be inaugurated on January 20 in 2021.
