When is the UK travel update announcement today?

Changes to travel rules are expected to be announced today by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps as updates to the green, amber and red lists are due.

Significant adjustments to the rules could be on the cards as Boris Johnson said ministers were considering “simplifying” the traffic light system for foreign travel while speaking at a Downing Street press conference on Tuesday.

The Prime Minister hinted that the testing process could be altered, with Covid testing for travellers potentially being eased.

He said that the government may make “the burdens of testing less onerous for those who are coming back into the country”.

Every three weeks changes are made to the lists, along with the requirements needed to travel abroad, so more details should be released on Thursday, September 16.

The exact time and date of the announcement are yet to be confirmed, but going by previous updates it usually takes place around 5pm.

Any changes revealed normally come into force the following Monday at 4am, meaning changes to the lists could be enforced from September 20.

Revealing the Government’s Winter Covid Plan in the Commons on Tuesday, the Health Secretary stated that there would be a review into the traffic light system on October 1, further details of which could be announced later.

This announcement may be the last travel update for the traffic light system, if it is scrapped next month.
