Winter Solstice 2020: when is the shortest day of the year in Glasgow?

Although Glasgow can be a stunner in the autumn, the beautiful colours brightening up our many pretty parks, the short nights at this time of year can be a little tough to take.

Today - Sunday November 8 - the sun came up (if you can see it) at 7.39am, while it will set at 4.21pm, a grand total of eight hours and 42 minutes of 'sunlight'.

Sadly, it will get worse. That's because the shortest day of the year is still quite some time away.

Just before Christmas, on Monday December 21, the Winter Solstice will arrive, giving approximately just seven hours of sunlight - less than any other day - with the sun rising at around 8.42am and setting at about 3.40pm.

By comparison, the longest day of the year in Glasgow usually yields over 17 and a half sunlight hours.

And although that bleak winter day might be hard to take - festive feelings aside - it will mean things are starting to change for the better - gradually the days will become longer as we creep very slowly towards summer.

Of course, things get even better when the clocks change. Although we lose an hour's sleep, when we hit Sunday March 28 it can be seen as a major turning point in saying goodbye to that Seasonal Affected Disorder.

So, sadly, for a while, we're just going to have to grin and bear it - at least the Christmas lights will soon bring a bit of brightness across our city!
