When is the PFA Player of the Year award announced and who is on the shortlist

Manchester City's Raheem Sterling is in contention to take home the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year award.

The England international has enjoyed a superb season for Man City as he steps up performances.

His competition for the award will come from Virgil van Dijk who has been an outstanding performer for Liverpool.

The defender's arrival has transformed the Anfield side into a fierce defensive unit who only conceded 20 goals this season - the best in the Premier League.

Here's what you need to know about the PFA Awards.

When are the PFA Awards 2019?

The award ceremony will take place on Sunday, April 28.

The 46th edition of the event will celebrate the performances of some standout players from the season.

The PFA Young Player of the Year will also be announced, as well as the divisional teams of the year from each division.

Another award presented on the evening will be the PFA Merit Award.

When are nominations announced?

The six-man shortlist will be revealed on Football Focus at 12.15 on Saturday, April 20.

Who votes and how does it work?

Every member of the PFA is given a vote in the different categories

A representative from the association will head to all 92 league clubs and the ten Women's Super League clubs to deliver ballot papers.

Players are not allowed to vote for their team-mates. They will then return the form to the PFA representative who will seal the vote.

An independent company is used to count and verify the votes.
