When is the Outlander season 6 release date and will it be on Amazon Prime Video? What we know about the new series so far

The wait is finally over.

After a two-year break, a new series of Outlander will return to our screens very soon.

The latest season of the hit time-travelling fantasy show is based on the sixth book in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series - A Breath of Snow and Ashes.

It follows the main characters Claire and Jamie Fraser as they try to build their new life in North Carolina. But political unrest is brewing - and with the American Revolutionary War looming - their plans are set to be thrown into turmoil.

Here’s everything we know so far about the new season.

When can I watch season 6 of Outlander?

The new series of Outlander will drop in the UK on 6 March on streaming service StarzPlay. The first episode promises to be longer than usual - running at a movie-length 90 minutes.

However, because of filming delays caused by the pandemic, the season will only consist of eight episodes - instead of the usual 12 or 13. The next season - the seventh in total - is expected to be extended to make up for the shortfall this time.

How can I watch Outlander season 6 and will it be on Amazon Prime Video?

The new series will not be available on Amazon Prime Video this time around. For the first time, the show is being released on streaming service StarzPlay instead.

StarzPlay costs £5.99 a month and can be accessed through the StarzPlay app, through Amazon Prime Video or on Virgin TV.

There are currently 7-day free trials available. Previous seasons are also now available on StarzPlay.

What is Outlander about and who is the cast?

Based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon, the series follows an English nurse called Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe) in World War 2, who mysteriously finds herself having travelled back in time to 1743.

Flashing back and forth in time, we see her husband Frank in 1945 trying to find her, and, in 1743, Claire meeting a young highlander called Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) - before getting caught up in the Jacobite risings of that time.

Action in the show moved to America in season 4 - when Jamie and Claire embarked on a new life in North Carolina to be part of the New World.

Central characters Roger Wakefield (Richard Rankin) and Brianna Randall (Sophie Skelton) are also expected to return for season 6.
