When is the next solar eclipse?

Astronomy buffs waiting in line to witness a solar eclipse in the coming weeks could be left disappointed.

The rare celestial phenomenon was expected to be visible in the UK at the start of next month according twosome trends on social media, with stargazers told keep a close eye on the skies at the start of August.

So far in 2025, intrepid stargazers have been spoiled with a lunar eclipse on March 13, accompanied by a blood moon.

There was then a partial solar eclipse on March 29.

But is there another event is set to take a hold of the skies?

Here is everything we know:

When will the next solar eclipse happen?

A solar eclipse is scheduled for August 2, just not this year.

The next full solar eclipse will take place on August 2, 2027.

Recent online mutterings on the likes of TikTok suggested there may be one coming on August 2, 2025 - but astronomers have confirmed that no solar eclipse will take place on August 2.

Why did people think it was August 2, 2025?

It is maybe a mix up between the years, but NASA has confirmed we have a bit longer than first thought to wait.

But it will be worth the wait, judging by predictions.

Experts say the 2027 one will be one of the longest ever.

At its peak, the totality, the phase where the Moon completely covers the Sun, will last an astonishing 6 minutes and 23 seconds, more than twice as long as most total solar eclipses.

It is predicted to be the longest total eclipse visible from land between the years 1991 and 2114.
