When is the May bank holiday 2022 and the four-day Platinum Jubilee weekend?

The long Easter weekend has been and gone and many people are now wondering when the next bank holiday in 2022 is. This year things are a little different as there won't be two bank holidays in May.

There will, however, be an extra bank holiday overall thanks to the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. The unprecedented anniversary, which marks 70 years since The Queen 's accession, will see the spring bank holiday take place in June.

This will be followed by an extra bank holiday called the platinum jubilee. It means the UK will enjoy a four-day bank holiday weekend.

But when is the next bank holiday? When is the spring bank holiday and what date will the long platinum jubilee weekend take place? Here are all the details.

When is the next bank holiday in the UK?

The next Bank Holiday in England and Wales will take place on Monday, May 2. This year there is only one bank holiday in May, with the spring bank holiday, which usually takes place at the end of May, moved to Thursday, June 2 for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

When is the extra bank holiday?

The spring bank holiday will take place on Thursday, June 2, followed by the extra one, called the platinum jubilee bank holiday, on Friday, June 3. The bank holiday is to mark 70 years since The Queen 's accession which is an unprecedented anniversary as it is the first time a British monarch has reached a platinum jubilee on the throne.

On the four-day bank holiday, the official royal website said: "On February 6 this year Her Majesty The Queen became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth.

"To celebrate this unprecedented anniversary, events and initiatives will take place throughout the year, culminating in a four-day UK bank holiday weekend from Thursday, June 2, to Sunday, June 5. The bank holiday will provide an opportunity for communities and people throughout the United Kingdom to come together to celebrate the historic milestone.

"The four days of celebrations will include public events and community activities, as well as national moments of reflection on The Queen’s 70 years of service."
