When is the Great North Run 2022 and how do I enter?

After a turbulent two years, the Great North Run will be back this autumn, and preparations are already well under way.

Around 57,000 people are expected to take part in the famous Great North Run half-marathon which also attracts crowds of supporters and a TV viewing audience from around the world.

The half-marathon - which was cancelled in 2020 then had a one-off change of route for 2021 - will be taking place this year on September 11, 2022. Those taking part are now getting into training in earnest.

Places are allocated each year through a ballot system and this opened on January 10 with places confirmed at the end of February.

Those interested in registering should visit the Great Run Company website, which organises the event as well as others countrywide.

Those who are not successful in the ballot still have a chance of taking part, by running of behalf of a charity - in which case an entry fee will go to their chosen good cause and they will also raise sponsorship for it. Find out more here about charity options.

Also, those classed as an elite athlete can receive complimentary entry to the Great North Run. There is certain criteria to meet and a restricted number of places: see here.

Those who are Great North Run members have a guaranteed place in the event but these sold out for 2022.
