When is the first day of autumn UK? The different dates explained

September has arrived and autumnal nights are just around the corner.

And despite not having much of a summer it seems high street stores and eateries are already gearing up for the colder weather.

Greggs launched its famous pumpkin spiced latte in August, the earliest ever, while B&M has already stocked its shelves with its festive range.

It makes sense because according to the meteorological calendar the first day of autumn always falls on September 1 and ends on November 30 but if you're not quite ready to put away your summer wardrobe then there is another date you can focus on.

This is called astronomical autumn, which is measured by the earth's orbit around the sun.

Unlike meteorological autumn, which sees seasons split to coincide with our Gregorian calendar and is the same every year, astronomical autumn changes annually.

According to the Met Office the astronomical calendar "determines the seasons due to the 23.5 degrees of tilt of the Earth's rotational axis in relation to its orbit around the sun", adding: Both equinoxes and solstices are related to the Earth's orbit around the Sun."

It means this year autumn officially starts on Wednesday, September 22, and ends on Tuesday, December 21 .

So if you follow this calendar you've still got over two weeks of summer to enjoy before caving into pumpkin soup and oversized jumpers.
