When is The Boys season 2 released on Amazon Prime? Trailer and plot details revealed

Superhero series are en vogue, with the success of the increasingly expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe leaving viewers with a taste for more high-powered high jinks.

But instead of the wholesome heroics we may have come to know and love over the years, superhero shows are taking a more realistic and undeniably bleaker approach to having supernatural abilities, with gritty shows such as The Umbrella Academy and Watchmen showing the disenchanting reality of heroism.

The Boys, which has been adapted from Garth Ennis’ 2006 comic book series of the same name, follows a world where superpowered individuals are marketed and monetised by a wealthy conglomerate – but outside their carefully PR’d personas, the superheroes are arrogant, sadistic and corrupted.

Looking to seek revenge, the series follows a group of vigilantes (the aforementioned ‘Boys’) who are out to expose the reality of these superheroes and keep their powers under control.

Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming second series…

When is season 2 of The Boys on Amazon Prime Video?

After the success of the first season, and that series one cliffhanger, The Boys will return Friday, September 4, 2020 on Amazon Prime Video. The first three episodes will be released on the streaming platform, with new additions every Friday.

Who's in the cast?

The main cast of boys are back (Amazon Prime Video)

Naturally, all the ‘Boys’ are returning for season two; headed up by intimidating Brit Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), newbie Hughie (Jack Quaid), muscles Marvin (Laz Alonso) slippery Frenchie (Tomer Capon) and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) will all be back for more.

Antony Starr plays Homelander (Amazon Prime Video)

Antony Starr returns as the psychopathic Superman-type Homelander, while warrior Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott), lightning fast A-Train (Jessie T Usher), sea super hero The Deep (Chace Crawford), and their newest recruit Starlight (Erin Moriarty) are also billed the return as The Seven – alongside the silent Black Noir (played by Nathan Mitchell).

Meanwhile Aya Cash joins the show as neo-Nazi Stormfront, who is set to cross paths viciously with The Boys.

Is there a trailer for season 2?

After several teaser clips, a full trailer was released in August, which you can watch here.

What is the show about?

Vought International are looking to meddle in global politics (Amazon Prime Video)

Following on from the first series, which sees Hughie join The Boys after his girlfriend is killed by one of The Seven, the second series will follow on as Billy tries to stay of Homelander’s radar following their shock confrontation at the end of last series.

Vought International is attempting to assert dominance on international politics by securing a defence contract with the US government – which is set to have disastrous consequences.

The Boys season two launches Friday, September 4 on Amazon Prime Video
