When is the best time to take down your Christmas tree and decorations

For many, putting their Christmas trees up is the start to the festive season as the twinkling lights and shiny baubles add festive fun to the room.

But we all know they won’t be up for very long, and packing them away again means Christmas is officially over.

Some take down their tree and decorations as soon as the day itself is over, while others wait as long as possible to soak up the Christmas cheer.

But when it the prime time to take down your Christmas tree and decorations?

When to take down your Christmas tree

Since Victorian times, the tradition has been to take down your tree on the Twelfth Night.

December 25 is the first of the Twelve Days of Christmas in most Christian denominations, which means the Twelfth Night falls on January 5.

Others wait until the next day and take everything down on January 6, which for the Church of England is the start of Epiphany.

Leaving decorations up any longer is supposed to bring bad luck, but most people want them out of the way by then anyway.

Until the 19th century, people would keep their decorations up until Candlemas Day on February 2.
