When is St Patrick's Day and what events are on across Glasgow to celebrate?

Soon people across the UK and Ireland will take part in St Patrick's Day traditions with the annual celebratory event just days away.

Whilst it may be an Irish tradition, many people across the country still celebrate it with events taking place around Glasgow to mark the occasion. Packed with parades, good luck charms - and of course all things green - the event started as a religious holiday but over time it has become a celebration of Irish culture.

So when is the big day and what's happening in the city? Here is what you need to know.

When is St Patrick's Day 2023?

St Patrick's Day takes place on March 17 of every year. This year that date falls on a Friday and comes just a few days before Mother's Day in the UK which takes place on Sunday, March 19.

Malones Glasgow

Taking to Facebook to confirm the event, Malones Glasgow, said it will be hosting a St Patrick's Weekend.

The Irish pub said: "It's that time of year again were we will be opening up the lane for a paddy's day street party! There will be Live music all day, live sports, two BBQ's, outside bars and plenty of celebrations going on over St Patricks Day Friday and Super Saturday were we'll be open till 3am!

"We will not be accepting bookings so get in early to make the most of the biggest weekend here at Malones Glasgow!"

Confirming the closure, Glasgow City Council have said that a part of Sauchiehall Lane will be closed to traffic on March 18 (Saturday) due to the upcoming celebrations at Malones with the road between Hope Street and Wellington Street closed between 10:30am and 10:30pm.

A notice on the official GCC website reads: "Please note that the area will be filled with tables, chairs, gazebos, toilets etc restricting emergency vehicle access."

The iconic Glasgow venue is set to host a St Patrick's Day festival with them writing on their official website: "Join us for a rip roaring atmosphere with lively traditional and Celtic music in the main bar, guest cask ales, and food specials all weekend."

From music celebrations to a Sunday Roast, there are plenty of events to choose from. The Whisky Bar, which is where the event is taking place, is one of the west end's most popular destinations, boasting over 300 malts.

Waxy O’Connor's

The award winning Irish bar is Glasgow’s biggest and is of course set to host an event during the celebratory week.

Open from 12pm, live music is set to kick off the celebrations at 4pm in the Church Bar with Fuiam, followed by Connor Markey, Big Bad Us and Mark Macgregor until late.

Taking to their website they've written: "We’ve got loads of giveaways, kegs and kegs of Guinness and lots of craic… so you should probably take the day off work!

"AND, if that’s not enough…the final round of this year Six Nation’s on the Saturday!. DJ Craigy P will be in Waxy’s to keep you entertained and there’s more live music taking you into the wee small hours, so you may as well make a long weekend of it."

The entry is free with the bar teasing on social media: "Yep it’s getting close...only one week to go until the biggest party of the year."
