Why do we celebrate Mother's Day and what are the origins of the occasion?

Mothering Sunday began as a Christian celebration that began during the Middle Ages.

It was encouraged that people who moved away from their home town should return back home to visit their 'mother' churches - and their mothers - on the fourth Sunday of Lent.

Childhood wasn't defined as it is in today's society, so children as young as 10 years of age would leave home to work.

And the fourth Sunday of Lent - known as Mothering Sunday - gave the opportunity for families to reunite.

The actual date Mother's Day falls on changes each year depending on when Lent falls.

Now Mother's Day has been adopted by many people from different cultures across the world and has evolved into a day dedicated to celebrating our mums.

How to celebrate Mother's Day in a pandemic.

In pre-pandemic times it was common practice to visit your mum on Mother's Day and shower her with flowers, gifts and quality time.

But as Ireland continues to battle through to safer times - how we celebrate this year is going to be a bit different to keep everyone safe.

With two weeks notice, you have enough time to organise flower and gift deliveries online - if you choose to spoil your mum that way.

If you live far away from your mum - organise a zoom call with the whole family and time it so you can all enjoy afternoon tea or lunch together through the screen.

With current level five restrictions, many people may not be able to meet up with their beloved mums for the day.
