When is Louise Minchin leaving BBC Breakfast?

Earlier this month Louise Minchin announced she would be stepping down as host of BBC Breakfast after 20 years on the show.

The presenter got emotional as she broke the news to viewers live and said she would no longer be setting her alarm for before 4am.

Louise joined the programme in 2001 and became lead presenter in 2012, so will be sorely missed by BBC viewers.

But when is Louise leaving BBC Breakfast, why is she quitting and who will be her replacement?

When is Louise Minchin leaving BBC Breakfast?

Rest assured it will be a while before Louise leaves the morning breakfast programme, although an exact date is yet to be confirmed by Louise or the broadcaster.

In her statement, Louise said: "It's not going to be for a while and just before anything else I wanted to thank everyone who is watching for your loyalty for your support over all those years, I have absolutely loved being part of it, I will really miss it but it is time now to stop."

She said she will leave sometime after the summer but "the date is not set in stone".

Why is Louise Minchin leaving BBC Breakfast?

While Louise said she has treasured being a part of the enormous BBC Breakfast family, the presenter is ready for a lie-in.

She explained to her co-host Dan Walker and viewers at home: "I've loved being a part of it. But, there is a but, you know about the but, I've decided that it is time that I stop setting my alarm for 3.40am, sometimes when I'm feeling really rebellious 3.46am in the morning and I'm going to be leaving the programme."

Louise added that her children can't remember a time when she wasn't working on the show.

Following her departure announcement Louise joined Good Morning Britain's Sean Fletcher, who was recently praised for speaking Welsh on the show, on Richard Osman's House Of Games.

Louise shared Sean's tweet, which read: "I've had a great time as on #mastermind + #Pointless in the past. But today I learnt that #HouseOfGames is even more enjoyable. Laughed a lot with @KimberlyKWyatt @louiseminchin + @ChrisWash_. And it's true what they say about @richardosman - serious contender 4 nicest man in TV."

"What a fun day this was," Louise added as she re-posted it on her social media channels.
