When is Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024? Date officially revealed

Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024, where we will see the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S24 family, will take place in San Jose, California, on Wednesday, January 17.

The Korean company officially revealed the date on its website and in an advert for its new phone.

In its event invite, Samsung teases an “all-new mobile experience powered by AI,” which aligns with previous reports about the Galaxy S24’s raft of AI features.

Here's what you need to know about Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024.

How to watch Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024

As with previous Unpacked events, you’ll be able to tune in live to the reveal as it happens.

The event will be streamed live on Samsung.com, Samsung Newsroom, and Samsung’s YouTube channel beginning at 6pm UK time on January 17.You’ll be able to finish work, settle down with a cup of tea, and see what “Galaxy AI” is all about.

What is Samsung Galaxy AI?

The prominence of the term Galaxy AI in the invite suggests it will be the overarching theme of the presentation. This is also expected to feature the Samsung Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra phones.

Samsung posted an article about Galaxy AI back in November, as a “glimpse” of what to expect.

“Galaxy AI is our most comprehensive intelligence offering to date, and it will change how we think about our phones forever,” said Wonjoon Choi, head of R&D at Samsung Mobile eXperience Business.

The one example we’ve heard about so far is “AI Live Translate Call.”

“Audio and text translations will appear in real-time as you speak, making calling someone who speaks another language about as simple as turning on closed captions when you stream a show,” Samsung said.

It sounds neat, but it’s also a natural development of translation and voice synthesis we had long before everything had to be labelled “AI”.

American blogger, editor, and phone leaker, Evan Blass, has also posted what appears to be a full-spec rundown of the new Galaxy S24 phones.

It helps to explain why AI is going to be under the spotlight because many of the Samsung Galaxy S24 family’s vital statistics are quite familiar.

Samsung Galaxy S24 specs

The leaked specs suggest the Samsung Galaxy S24 will have a 50MP camera and a 6.2-inch screen, just fractionally larger than the 6.1-inch display of the Galaxy S23. The battery is of a fractionally higher capacity too, 4000mAh to 3900mAh. And it has the familiar trio of cameras on the back.

One level up, the Samsung Galaxy S24+ will have a 6.7-inch screen with higher QHD+ resolution and faster charging. It will reach 65% battery in 30 minutes, which is unremarkable among modern phones.

The top-tier Galaxy S24 Ultra has Samsung S-Pen stylus support and trades aluminum sides for Titanium ones. Titanium is a very light, tough, and expensive metal, used by Apple in the iPhone 15 Pro phones.

Samsung’s Ultra series also has more cameras than the lower-end tiers, and what Samsung calls a Quad Telephoto array. This may appear to suggest it has four zoom cameras, but it doesn’t. The 2X, 3X, 5X, and 10X views are made up of both native and digitally zoomed fields of view.

These could even suggest an on-paper downgrade from the Galaxy S23 Ultra, with 3X and 5X zoom lenses rather than the 3X and 10X zooms the Ultra offers today.

However, all these details will not be confirmed until Samsung Unpacked kicks off.
