When is Eurovision and when are the semi finals? Contest returns after last year's cancellation

After being cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Eurovision Song Contest is back for 2021 and the final is now firmly on the horizon.

Fans of the annual extravaganza were left distraught last year when Covid-19 forced it to be pulled for the first time in its history.

But, as it was meant to in 2020, following Duncan Laurence's win for the Netherlands in 2019, Rotterdam will be the contest's home this year, with performers from 41 countries competing.

All of them, bar one, will be there in person, with Australian act Montaigne unable to travel over to Holland for the event.

Favourites for the Eurovision crown this year include Malta's entry Destiny with her song Je Me Casse and France's Barbara Pravi with Voila, with Switzerland, Italy and Iceland also well fancied.

The majority of countries will need to get past the semi-finals to make the final, apart from the 'big 5' - United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Spain and the host nation.

When is Eurovision?

A huge global audience will tune into the Eurovision Song Contest final on Saturday, May 22, but there is plenty more singing to be done before then.

The first semi final, which will feature the likes of Malta, Sweden, Ireland and Israel will take place on Tuesday, May 18 and the second semi, involving San Marino, Greece, Ireland and Denmark and more, follows on Thursday, May 20.

UK viewers will be able to watch the final on BBC1 and listen to it on Radio 2, with the semi finals being broadcast on BBC Four.

This year's UK entrant is James Newman, who is hoping to finish well away from the bottom of the leaderboard with his song Embers.

Former Newcastle University student James was first meant to represent the UK last year with another track, My Last Breath.
