Donald Trump will appear before a New York court on Tuesday to become the first US president to face criminal charges.
Trump will be arraigned, fingerprinted and possibly photographed as he enters the Lower Manhattan courthouse as a defendant, although the specific charges remain under seal. The appearance follows on from a grand jury deciding to indict Trump for allegedly paying $130,000 in hush money to former porn star Stormy Daniels and the ex-president is set to plead not guilty.
Trump denies having had a relationship with her and has vowed to fight the charges, which threaten to further deepen the US political rift. The claims date back to 2016.
What happens is likely to have a major impact on whether Trump will still stand as the Republican candidate for the 2024 American election, as he intends, or if he will abandon the run.
When is Donald Trump in court?
Trump will be in court to hear charges and enter a plea at 2.15pm local time, which will be 6.15pm in the UK.
The hearing will not be broadcast. The district attorney Alvin Bragg, a Democrat, who led the investigation, will give a news conference later in the afternoon. It is likely this will be the time that the public hears what the charges facing Trump are.
Trump plans to return to Mar-a-Lago, his Florida estate, to hold a primetime news conference where he is likely to double down on his claimed innocence. This will be held at 8.15pm local time, around 1.15am in the UK.
The 76-year-old was said to be in a “defiant and focused,” state as he landed in New York on Monday. "We have to take back our Country and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" he wrote on his Truth Social profile.
