Boris Johnson's chief adviser Dominic Cummings will make a public statement this afternoon.
The Prime Minister's aide is expected to address the nation in the wake of mounting pressure for him to resign.
Cummings is accused of breaking lockdown restrictions after it emerged he had travelled 260 miles from London to County Durham in March to self-isolate with his family.
Further reports also suggested he took a second trip to the North East in April, having already returned to London following his recovery from the virus, flouting official guidelines warning against long-distance journeys.
The Prime Minister sparked fury yesterday when he insisted his adviser had acted “responsibly”.
Dominic Cummings is expected to answer questions at a press conference at 4pm.
The speech will be shown live on news channels including the BBC, Sky and Channel 4.
BBC's Laura Kuenssberg said: "Dominic Cummings is expected to give a public statement and take questions later himself, as calls for him to quit and explain himself mount."
Nicola Sturgeon is among many politicians calling for Dominic Cummings to be removed from his post.
The First Minister said: "I know it is tough to lose a trusted adviser at the height of crisis, but when it’s a choice of that or integrity of vital public health advice, the latter must come first.
"That’s the judgment I and, to her credit, Catherine Calderwood reached. PM and Cummings should do likewise."
