When Irish League clubs can expect to discover fate after season ends

Irish League clubs could discover their fate within 24 hours after the season was drawn to a close on Tuesday.

The NI Football League confirmed this morning that the 2019/20 campaign would be "curtailed immediately".

A mathematical formula will be used to determine the final standings in the Danske Bank Premiership, Bluefin Sport Championship and Premier Intermediate League.

The method used to finalise those positions will be decided by an independent football data consultancy.

It is understood that firm is already in receipt of all relevant information, with a recommendation expected on Wednesday.

It will then be up to the NI Football League Board to ratify before all details are relayed to clubs and stakeholders in all three divisions.

Titles will be awarded to the three teams who finish top in each league, with promotion and relegation also coming into effect.

Linfield led Coleraine by four points when the Premiership was suspended back in March, with Institute three points adrift of Warrenpoint Town at the basement.

Meanwhile, Portadown lead the Championship by six points, with Annagh United three points clear a the top of the PIL.

"The process is now in the hands of the independent body who have used these football formulas several times before," said NI Football League Board chairman Brian Adams.

"We would hope to have their conclusions back to us within the next 24 hours.

"Once we hear back from the consultancy firm we will be in contact with all clubs and relevant stakeholders to update them.

"I would like to thank Andy Johnston, Steven Mills and all the staff for their hard work up to this point."

All football in Northern Ireland has been suspended since March 13, with today's announcement bringing the curtain down on a protracted saga lasting over three months.

NIFL said in an earlier statement: "The NIFL board sought to consider the submissions provided by all clubs across each of the divisions and express their thanks for feedback and patience of all clubs during this challenging process.

"Throughout the process a range of options to either resume or curtail season 2019/20 were appraised against the key principles of health, finance and sporting integrity and while each option impacted the key principles in their own specific way, the board has endeavoured to make decisions in the best interest of the NI Football League."
