'When he was at Liverpool' - Gary Neville makes bold Raheem Sterling claim

Gary Neville believes that since leaving Liverpool Raheem Sterling has really become a 'high quality' player.

Sterling, who joined the Reds as a 15-year-old from Queens Park Rangers in 2010, left Anfield in acrimonious circumstances in the summer of 2015.

At the time, then Reds boss Brendan Rodgers claimed Sterling turned down an 'incredible' new deal as he also refused to travel on a pre-season tour of the Far East in a bid to force through a move away.

Since joining the Etihad club, Sterling has gone to establish himself as one of the leading wingers in the Premier League.

As well as winning one FA Cup and three League Cups, the England international has also won three league titles with Pep Guardiola’s side.

And Neville believes that Sterling’s development since leaving Liverpool is testament to Guardiola’s coaching.

“He has been a key player [for England],” he told Sky Sports. “Raheem is someone who at Manchester City in these last three or four years has basically torn it up.

“His goals, assists have got to a level of real high quality for England and Manchester City.

“It’s a level where when he was at Liverpool you might have viewed him as inconsistent and erratic in the final moment.

“But with the work that Pep has done with him at Manchester City, there is no doubt now that he has become someone who plays on the left hand side.”
