When fantasy meets popular folklore: Artist Kiki Smith’s work on display in Paris

ENCORE! FRANCE 24

For the first time in her four-decade career, the giant of contemporary art Kiki Smith has a solo exhibition in France. Eve Jackson visits the Monnaie de Paris to meet the American artist and check out 100 of her works from the 1980s to the present day.

She’s made sculptures of body parts, tapestries depicting animals and the cosmos, and drawings of wolves and women. The symbolism of the American artist Kiki Smith’s work finds its inspiration in her childhood memories – her reading of the fairy tales of Perrault and the brothers Grimm – and the model making she did for her father, the sculptor Tony Smith.

Her early art was entrenched in the political and social upheaval of the 1980s, reflecting on activism around sexuality, gender and the AIDS crisis, to which she lost her sister and many friends.

FRANCE 24's Eve Jackson visits the Paris Mint to meet the artist and discover 100 of her works from the 1980s to the present day.
