Warzone is officially dropping old-gen support in stages across June 2026, with PS4 and Xbox One becoming completely unplayable once Modern Warfare 4 Season 1 goes live.
That means every PS4 and Xbox One player now needs to know when downloads stop, when the in-game store disappears, and when the game itself becomes unplayable. This comes shortly after Activision confirmed to be finally ditching the previous PlayStation gen for their next Call of Duty.
So, here’s a clear breakdown of every important date and what it means for your Warzone account.
When Warzone drops old-gen support, full timeline
June 4, 2026 – No more new downloads
Starting June 4, 2026, Warzone will no longer be available for new downloads on PS4 and Xbox One. If you already have the game installed on those consoles, you can still log in and play, but new players on PS4 or Xbox One cannot freshly download Warzone from the store.
Existing players should avoid deleting the game, because reinstalling from the store will not be possible on those platforms anymore.
June 25, 2026 – In-game store removed
The second key date is June 25, 2026. On this day, the Warzone in-game store on PS4 and Xbox One is removed. That means you can no longer buy new bundles, including COD Points bundles, on PS4 and Xbox One.
You can still play the game on those consoles after this date, but the monetization and live-store side is effectively shut down. Players can still progress through free Battle Pass tiers and unlock new weapons tied to remaining Black Ops 7 seasons, even though the store is gone.
Modern Warfare 4 Season 1 – Old gen becomes unplayable
When Modern Warfare 4 arrives on October 23, 2026, Warzone integration with the new game will kick in with Season 1 shortly afterward, and that is when old-gen Warzone officially dies.
Beginning in Season 1 of MW4, Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One will no longer be playable at all. If PS4 or Xbox One is your only platform, you will lose access to Warzone gameplay once Season 1 starts. The focus shifts fully to current-gen hardware: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 for the new experience.
Activision describes this as part of a “connected experience” between Modern Warfare 4 and Warzone, with seasonal content and progression shared across both titles on supported platforms only.
Why Warzone is dropping old-gen support
Modern Warfare 4 is a current-gen-only release, built natively for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
The MW4 blog highlights a “current-generation focus” with bigger combat spaces, higher density, and more consistent performance, which are much harder to deliver on old-gen hardware.
What old gen Warzone players can still do?
Even with the sunset confirmed, PS4 and Xbox One players still have a window of time to wrap things up.
Until Season 1 of MW4 begins, you can still:
- Play Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One, as long as the game is already installed
- Progress through free Battle Pass tiers, including unlocking new weapons connected to the remaining BO7 seasons
- Use existing COD Points and previously purchased content that is already in your account, subject to how your Activision ID is linked across platforms
What you cannot do after the phased dates:
- After June 4, 2026, you can no longer download Warzone on PS4 or Xbox One
- After June 25, 2026, you cannot access the in-game store on those consoles, and certain items like COD Points bundles will no longer be purchasable there
- After MW4 Season 1 starts, you can’t play Warzone at all on PS4 or Xbox One
Will your Warzone progress and content carry over to current-gen consoles and PC?
Activision’s website says, “Yes, as long as you play using the same linked Activision account, you can continue your Call of Duty: Warzone experience on a current-generation console or PC. Your full progression and content purchased with COD Points will carry over to any supported platform. Some other content, including COD Points, will only be available on a current-generation console within the same console family.”
“Content purchased with COD Points is shared across your Activision account and will be available on supported platforms when playing on the same linked Activision account used when the content was acquired. COD Points you purchased or earned through Battle Pass progression are tied to platform accounts. Any unspent COD Points on an unsupported console will be available to redeem on the current-generation console within the same console family when using the same account. Most content purchased with local currency is tied to platform accounts and can be used in-game on the current-generation console within the same console family when using the same account. This includes content associated with another Call of Duty title, which will remain available in their respective games,” their FAQ page continued.
