When does the summer transfer window close for EFL clubs? The key changes you need to know

The EFL transfer window will close on the exact same day as last year following votes to copy the Premier League’s cut-off date last season.

Previously, the EFL didn’t have to follow suit and clubs could sign a player on a permanent transfer until a day before September starts - a month into the new season.

The rules differ for loans however, with EFL clubs being permitted to sign players on loan until the August 31, with a view to a permanent transfer in the next window.

They can also register players who refused to sign on to a club up until August 31, plus teams can transfer out whoever they want as long as the club buying is operating in an open window.

The decision to shorten the window until it now closes on August 9, came after votes from Football League clubs, and EFL chief executive Shaun Harvey claims it will add much needed flexibility.

“After discussing the options throughout the course of the last few months, I’m pleased that the matter has been determined by clubs ahead of the start of next season,” announced Harvey for the EFL.

“This new approach will give clubs and managers the stability they crave earlier in the season whilst also providing the flexibility to add to their squads after the traditional deadline until the end of the month if required.”
