When does the national lockdown in England end?

Boris Johnson is to unveil his winter lockdown strategy later today.

The Prime Minister will set out plans for a strengthened three-tier system of coronavirus restrictions to replace the national lockdown in England.

Mr Johnson will also detail a limited relaxation in the rules for over Christmas, which would allow a small number of households to be able to mix for a set number of days.

The PM will make a virtual statement today in the Commons at 3.30pm to MPs, followed by a televised address to the nation later this evening.

So when does the national lockdown end?

The second lockdown in England was announced on Halloween on October 31.

England at the time was split into three Tiers - 1, 2, and 3 - depending on the severity of the virus in that geographical area.

The new lockdown then came into force at 0.01 on November 5 after it was passed through parliament.

On the announcement, Mr Johnson said it would last for four weeks.

Therefore, the national lockdown is set to expire and end on December 2.

This means that a new set of tiered restrictions should come into effect at 0.01 on Wednesday, December 2.

'Lockdown 2' has seen non-essential shops close, along with pubs and restaurants, among other venues.

While some measures will be eased for some parts of the country, Health Secretary Matt Hancock has warned that the tiered system will “have to be stronger” than it was previously.

He told BBC Breakfast: "The number of cases is now clearly starting to fall across the whole of the UK.

"In England, we come to the end of the lockdown as you know on December 2, and so we do think that we can replace the lockdown with a tiered system.

"But the tiered system, whilst lighter than lockdown, will have to be stronger than the previous tiers that were in place."

Meanwhile, Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham has said many hospitality businesses would not survive a toughened system of tiered controls in England.

Mr Burnham told BBC Radio 4: "They seem to be going too far before Christmas to allow too much over Christmas and that will lead to a huge loss of hospitality businesses, which I would say is too big a price to pay.

“To close all hospitality businesses in Tier 3 areas – that will be large parts of the North – that will be devastating for many of those businesses. They will not survive that.”
