Trump extends ceasefire after Iran derails second round of peace talks

  • President Donald Trump has extended the ceasefire between the US and Iran – just 24 hours before it was due to expire.
  • “Based on the fact that the government of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so and, upon the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, of Pakistan, we have been asked to hold our attack on the country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post Tuesday.
  • He continued, “I have therefore directed our military to continue the blockade and, in all other respects, remain ready and able, and will therefore extend the ceasefire until such time as their proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other.”
  • Trump said Monday that the two-week ceasefire, announced April 7, was due to expire “Wednesday evening Washington time” and that it was “highly unlikely” that he’d extend it.
  • The extension comes as a second round of talks in Islamabad look increasingly uncertain, with Vice President JD Vance’s trip to Pakistan called off Tuesday as Iran refused to send a delegation for negotiations.
