When does Ramadan end and when is Eid?

Muslims across the world are currently observing the holy month of Ramadan - albeit a little different this year due to the current circumstances.

It is the first celebration on the Islamic calender and includes fasting, prayer, giving and self-evaluation.

Ramadan lasts for four weeks and require them to abstain from food and drink, and, water, from sunrise to sunset.

It is also meant to help those observing Ramadan to focus on prayer, purification and charitable acts.

The religious holiday began on Thursday, April 23.

The month-long festival is set to end on the evening of Saturday, May 23.

A celebration and feast, known as Eid ul-Fitr, marks the breaking of the fast at the end of Ramadan, will then start on the evening of May 23 and end on the evening of Sunday May 24.

Eid is often marked with lights, decorations and gifts, with worshippers often dressing up and decorating their homes.

However, due to the current lockdown restrictions people are being asked to stick to marking the celebration in their own homes.

Eid also starts the month of Shawwal, the 10th month in the Islamic calendar and is a symbol of new life and renewal following the month of Ramadan.

Shawwal is also the time that moon-sighting committees in each country all across the world get together after the sunset prayers in order to see the new moon.
