What time does national lockdown start? When UK lockdown begins and review date

Boris Johnson has confirmed that England will enter a third national lockdown.

In a TV address on Monday evening the Prime Minister confirmed that stay at home messaging is also returning in a bid to get back on top of the coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Johnson said people should "follow the new rules from now", and they will become law when clocks strike midnight on Tuesday, going into Wednesday.

That means from 12.01am on January 6 you people cannot leave their homes except for specific reasons including work, shopping for essentials and exercise.

MPs will also debate and vote on the new measures on Wednesday.

The rules are set to remain in place until the middle of February and will only be relaxed if the situation in hospitals has improved.

Under the new national lockdown, schools will remain closed until the February half-term - except for vulnerable children and kids of key workers - while the firm "stay at home" message that became so familiar in March last year returns.

If schools are to reopen after the February break, it would mean the review must be done by or during the week of February 15-19.

Tens of thousands of businesses, including non-essential retail, hospitality and personal care services, must also close their doors again, while essential retailers such as supermarkets pharmacies can remain open, as can garden centres and builders merchants.

Individual supermarket chains have also brought in their own rules.

North of the border, Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has also announced a national lockdown.

Scotland's lockdown will begin from midnight tonight and include the closure of all schools - including nurseries - until February.

Wales is already on a national lockdown, and has been since December.
