When do the new coronavirus tier restrictions start in England?

Boris Johnson finally unveiled the government's new three tier restrictions for England in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus.

Details of the new system was announced by the Prime Minister on Monday after days of rumours and leaks.

Areas of England will now be ordered into “medium”, “high” and “very high” alert levels - or Tier one, two and three.

Areas listed as medium will be subject to the same rules as those which currently apply across the country, such as the rule of six and the 10pm hospitality curfew.

In the high alert level, which will apply to most of the areas already subject to local restrictions, household mixing will be banned indoors.

The very high alert level will apply to areas causing the most concern, and social mixing will be prohibited indoors and in private gardens with pubs and bars also being ordered to close unless they can operate as a restaurant.

People will also be advised against travel in and out of the areas.

The Liverpool City region is the only area to be placed in the very highest tier and will see pubs, bars, gyms and leisure centres, betting shops, casinos and adult gaming centres close.

The new measures are set to come into force from Wednesday (October 14).

There will be a four-week "sunset clause" for areas facing the toughest restrictions.

Measures are to be kept under review, and the secretary of state will review Tier 2 areas at least once a fortnight, and restrictions under Tier 2 once every 28 days.

First, MPs will debate and vote on the measures on Tuesday (October 13).
