When do the clocks go forward and change back in 2020?

After a long winter, which has recently seen the impact of Storms Ciara and Dennis hit Bristol, we are more than ready for some longer evenings.

For those who can never remember which way the clocks go there is a simple way to remind yourself: Spring forward, fall back.

As it is Spring next month the clocks will be going forward one hour, taking us from GMT to British Summer Time.

This year we change the clocks on Sunday, March 29 at 2am.

If you have a smart phone, laptop, tablet or internet-connected TV the time should change automatically. But your analogue clocks will need to be changed manually (or you can wait six months until they're right again).

Why do the clocks change?

Benjamin Franklin came up with the clock change idea in Paris in 1784.

The lightbulb-inventor suggested that people could save money on candles if they got up when it was lighter outside.

In 1907, this idea was brought to the UK by a builder called William Willett, who published a leaflet called The Waste of Daylight, encouraging people to wake up earlier.

Sadly, the UK government took some convincing to make the clock change official, and it wasn’t until 1916 - a year after Willett died - that the clock change was implemented in the UK.
