When do the clocks go forward 2021 and when is the first day of spring?

The first day of spring is almost here and the change in clocks follows shortly after.

It marks the beginning of longer days filled with sunshine and blooming daffodils.

Spring is also significant this year as it coincides with the easing of lockdown restrictions in Wales, with garden centres reopening soon and supermarkets selling items such as toys, clothes and outdoor products again.

You can read more about they key dates outlined by the Welsh Government here.

So as temperatures rise and the days get lighter, here's everything you need to know about spring.

When is the first day of spring 2021?

The official date for the start of astronomical spring in the UK is Saturday, March 20.

According to the Met Office: "Astronomical seasons refer to the position of Earth's orbit in relation to the sun, considering equinoxes and solstices.

"This is due to the 23.5 degrees of tilt of the Earth's rotational axis concerning its orbit around the sun. Since the seasons vary in length, the start date of a new season can fall on different days each year."

Spring will last until Monday, June 21 - the summer solstice and the longest day of the year.

However, if you thought March 1 always signalled the start of spring, you're not wrong.

There are actually two springs, the astronomical and the meteorological.

If you refer to the meteorological calendar, which splits the seasons into four periods made up of three months each, spring will always start on March 1 and end on May 31.

The Met Office states: "Meteorological seasons are instead based on the annual temperature cycle and measure the meteorological state, as well as coinciding with the calendar to determine a clear transition between the seasons."

When do the clocks go forward 2021?

Just one week after the official start of spring the clocks will change.

In the UK the clocks go forward one hour at 1am on the last Sunday in March, and back one hour at 2am on the last Sunday in October.

This year the clocks go forward on March 28.

The period when the clocks are one hour ahead is called British Summer Time and it means there's more daylight in the evenings allowing us to maximise sunlight hours all year round.
