When do the clocks go back? We hate to break it to you but it's that time of year again

Brace yourselves. The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting darker, longer and, of course, much colder.

Unfortunately it seems that winter is now well and truly on its way – and with the clocks going back later this month it's usually a time we're all trying to make the most of the daylight and semi-decent weather (if you could call it that).

Edinburgh's sun is setting just before 6.20pm at the moment but expect that to change dramatically in the coming weeks.

For the clocks go back at 2am on the last Sunday of October – which this year is 27 October.

While that does pretty much signal the start of winter and darker nights, it does also mean an extra hour in bed on the Sunday, and lighter mornings – every cloud, I guess.

And if you're worried about your smartphone displaying the wrong time there's a really easy way to make sure it changes too.

On an iPhone all you need to do is select 'general', 'date and time' and then make sure the 'set automatically' button is in green, with the time zone set to London.
