When do hotels reopen in Ireland? All you need to know about the hospitality sector

Hotels, B&Bs, guesthouses and self-catering accommodation can open again in Ireland on June 2.

Outdoor hospitality - including restaurants and all pubs - will open on June 7.

Staycations will be back on the cards for Irish people.

President of the Irish Hotels Federation, Elaina Fitzgerald Kaine said the reopening of Irish tourism is good news for people looking to staycation this year, as well as those employed in the tourism sector.

Allowing the hospitality to reopen "gives an impetus now for our sector to plan for reopening in earnest as part of the survival and recovery of Irish hotels and guesthouses as well as the broader tourism community," she said.

"We look forward to continuing to engage with the Government towards a safe and sustainable reopening."

Residents at hotels will be eating and drinking indoors for only "a few weeks" before independent restaurants can allow customers to dine inside, Tanaiste Leo Varadkar has said.

It comes as some restaurants have come together to start a campaign called #ThePlan in a bid to get all restaurants reopened on June 2 - the same date as hotels.

At the end of June, the government will begin reconsiderations for indoor dining at restaurants along with the reopening of bars, nightclubs and casinos.

While we have no set date for when we can holiday abroad again, the Irish government is planning to become part of the European Commission's green passport scheme to make travelling in the EU more accessible as soon as possible.

The date the EU is aiming for is June 21, according to Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte.

Top tips for booking a hotel

  • Try and opt for a flexible booking policy where you can. Most brands now offer flexible rates which means you may pay a little extra, but you can cancel or amend your holiday last minute without losing out on some cash. For example, Travelodge lets you cancel up to midday on your scheduled arrival date.
  • If you need to book a hotel for essential travel before the key dates listed above, it's worth looking at booking directly with the hotel. They will be able to advise you of any restrictions or which services may be unavailable during your stay.
  • Get travel insurance - you can opt for a policy that will cover a trip cancellation (although double check the fine print if the cancellation is a result of Covid related reasons). Travel insurance for a staycation is still useful as it will cover you for things like lost or stolen possessions,
