When do Covid self-isolation rule changes come in and will I no longer need to isolate?

Boris Johnson is set to announce the next round of rule changes for living with Covid in days.

Several potential planned changes are due to be announced to the House of Commons and a report - the Living Safely With Covid plan - is due to be published, outlining the details.

Changes to self-isolation rules is one expected announcement, along with the eventual scrapping of free PCR tests and the Test and Trace Support Payment undergoing a review.

Whatever is confirmed in the final document, the new plans will outline some significant changes as Brits look ahead to dealing with the virus in the future.

Some experts are already questioning if now is the right time for changes, due to the current high number of people with the virus, but the government hopes that the steady decline in cases means the plans can go ahead.

So what changes to isolation will happen and when will the PM announce them?

After the Living Safely With Covid plan is unveiled, the PM is expected to announce that self-isolation rules will change from around February 24.

Regulations were due to lapse on March 24 and the PM has already announced that the end to restrictions could be brought forward by a month.

The date has not yet been confirmed and the public will be told during the February 21 announcement.

How will isolation rules change?

The Covid rule changes will mean mandatory self-isolation is scrapped, even for people who have the virus. Currently, people who test positive must go into isolation for at least five full days.

Essentially, the change will mean that no forced restrictions are in place. Those who test positive and are ill will put themselves into isolation, with the government encouraging responsible decision-making.

The government said: "We’re not saying isolation is pointless. We’d expect anyone with an infectious disease to take steps not to spread that disease further - a colleague at work with flu, for example."

It should be noted that these are domestic rule changes and people travelling may still be required to isolate based on the rules of the country they are visiting. They will also still require a test when returning from the UK, and this means that isolation rules for returning Brits could also remain in place.

Are the changes to self-isolation rules safe?

There has been criticism of this change over fear this will give people sick with Covid the licence to roam around, potentially infecting others.

The £500 self-isolation payment for low-income workers also faces being scrapped, but no decision appears to have been made yet.

People currently have the right to claim Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) from their first day of illness with Covid, but this may change if the Coronavirus Act 2020 lapses in full in March.

TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said: "It's vital that sick pay remains a Day One right and is made available to all. Workers who are laid low by Covid must be able to make ends meet."

The concerns are that scrapping both SSP and the £500 payment will discourage people from staying away from work if they are ill, while the axing of free PCR and lateral flow tests will make it harder for people to get tested in the first place.

Another 199 people died after catching Covid in the UK on Wednesday, but the government has indicated plans to go ahead with the changes.
