When Celtic could be crowned champions as UEFA prepare to meet

Not only does the SPFL's resolution bring the curtain down on the lower leagues, it signposts what's likely to come in the Premiership.

On Wednesday night, the Dundee voting saga finally reached a conclusion, the Dens Park side flip-flopping from no to yes and handing league bosses their required majority.

The Championship, League One and League Two have been declared over, with Dundee United, Raith Rovers and Cove Rangers crowned title winners.

The SPFL now have the power to do the same in the Premiership but are set to hold off pulling the trigger for now.

The reason? UEFA's threat that calling a halt to top-flight campaigns carries the risk of jeopardising involvement in European competition next season.

The European governing body and, indeed, several clubs want to give the season every chance to be played out on the pitch but there's a growing consensus that simply may not be possible.

The UK lockdown is set to be extended on Thursday, with Scottish clubs advised current restrictions on football will be in place until at least June 10, likely longer.

Mass gatherings are expected to among the last strands of normality to return, and the prospect of closed door football has barely been discussed in Scotland.

It means what happens next is likely to be influenced significantly by a UEFA meeting on April 23.

European football bosses will connect via video-link and likely provide guidance on where member associations can go from here.

If they give league bodies the nod to pull the plug, expect the Premiership to be declared over shortly after, likely before the end of the month.

That will crown Celtic champions, sealing a ninth successive triumph for the Parkhead side.

It's almost certain Hearts would face relegation to the Championship, with talks over league reconstruction offering them a glimmer of hope should their worst case scenario materialise.
