When can Irish people go on holidays abroad this summer? EU travel restrictions to ease

Certain European Union travel restrictions are set to ease today.

The easing of restrictions will affect EU countries in the schengen area - an area comprising of 26 EU countries that have officially got rid of all passport and all other types of border control at their joined borders.

Although the countries have have mainly control-free borders, they have been closed for nearly three months with the exception of for delivery of goods and the commutes of necessary workers.

Before the coronavirus pandemic, 3.5 million people on average crossed an internal EU border daily, according to a European Parliament report last year.

European Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson pushed last week for these countries to lift their internal border controls by today, to allow for the reopening to other EU countries from July.

The reopening of the borders could help save income for a part of the summer season for the struggling EU travel and tourism industry.

However, it won't be as easy as before for the 420 million people living in this part of the EU.

The ability to travel will as for now depend on where you're from and where your destination is.

Countries like Britain and Greece will require self-isolation for all people arriving into the countries.

Greece will require quarantine from those arriving from certain airports in eight EU countries.

The Czech Republic is using a traffic-light system which will deny entry to tourists from what are deemed as 'orange' or 'red' countries such as Portugal and Sweden.

Denmark are set to allow tourists from Iceland, Germany and Norway, but not Sweden, unless they book at least six nights' accommodation.

At Brussels Airport, they are expecting to see about 60 flights operating on the first day of their reopening ,10% of the normal 600.
