When can Chiefs backup QB Chad Henne return from injured reserve?

The Kansas City Chiefs are still working their way through the quarterback situation with starting QB Patrick Mahomes dealing with a kneecap dislocation.

Matt Moore appears to be the interim starter, but the Chiefs have a few other options to consider when it comes to adding a backup for Moore. One of those options is elevating Kyle Shurmur from the practice squad. Another option on the table is to bring former backup QB Chad Henne back from injured reserve.

Henne was the Chiefs’ No. 2 QB in 2018. He injured his ankle during Week 3 of the 2019 preseason, suffering a fracture and a sprain. He was on the Week 1 roster for the Chiefs before going to IR, which makes him eligible to return this season. He just isn’t able to return to action quite yet.

“As I understand, Chad isn’t eligible to come back until after Week 8,” Reid said during his Friday conference call. “We would have another week here before he could actually get back.”

Reid understands correctly. Henne must be on injured reserve through Week 8 before he’s eligible to return to practice. Even then, Henne might not be ready to return from injury as early as Week 9. Reid explained that he’s still working through his rehabilitation and recovery.

“He’s getting close. He’s getting there,” Reid said of Henne. “He’s been working his tail off. I haven’t taken him out and thrown with him and all of that, so I can’t tell you how all of that is going.”

Reid wouldn’t commit to readiness for Henne because he hasn’t seen him throw yet. Henne is eligible to return to practice for the Chiefs as he has spent six weeks on the injured reserve list. The fact that he hasn’t yet returned to practice tells you that he’s still dealing with some issues related to his injured ankle.

After Henne practices, the Chiefs would have the option of designating him as one of their two players to return from the injured reserve list. The only other player on the list capable of returning this season is defensive tackle Xavier Williams, who was recently placed on the list with an ankle injury.
