Boris Johnson's lockdown speech to outline coronavirus road map and new strategy

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to outline a road map to easing the coronavirus lockdown rules in his speech tonight.

The Prime Minister will set out what he aims to see for the summer months , with many predicting a loosening of the current rules.

Mr Johnson is set to address the nation on Sunday evening at 7pm.

He is also understood to be announcing a new main message, getting rid of stay at home in favour of stay alert

Although there has been much speculation that the current rules will be relaxed transport secretary Grant Shapps said that the government would move with "extreme caution" and that the exit strategy would a "gradual progress"

A Cobra Covid-19 meeting will take place ahead of the announcement and the devolved leaders will be involved.

Although the lockdown was legally extended on Thursday, Mr Johnson is expected to announce some changes tomorrow evening. He is expected to allow garden centres to open, allow private worship in churches and allow people to exercise in the open.

The speech will be broadcast live on Sky News and the BBC.

Speaking after Thursday's Cobra Covid-19 meeting Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab confirmed there have been no changes made to the restrictions at present. He encouraged everyone to abide by the current rules over the long bank holiday weekend.

However, he confirmed that the Prime Minister will announce some small changes to the lockdown restrictions in a TV speech on Sunday -but warned they could be quickly removed if people do not adhere to social distancing measures.

Earlier Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was firm in her message that the lockdown north of the border won't be lifted - she said a move away from the stay at home message could be "catastrophic".

Tomorrow's speech will be broadcast live on Sky News and the BBC.
