When blogging met consumerism

Those who got so exercised over the whole what-is-a-blog debate might be interested in checking out the latest creations from Mink Media, self-styled nanopublishers and aspirants to the crown of British Gawker.

Mink went live yesterday with bleepblog, for gadgets and tech-geek stuff, and closetspy, for fashion and the shopping-as-pathology crew.

(We probably should have blogged this yesterday but hey, we're a Sunday paper, we're very busy at the beginning of the week.)

Puts kettle on. Leafs through newspapers. Slowly peels grape.

Mink add the new titles to their existing stable of three blogs, all launched within the last few months. They say they are now going to pause for breath and consolidate.

Here in Observer Towers (Blog Wing) we are becoming quite regular readers of Honourablefiend, a valiant foray into political blogging the American way. We also admire the Marmite-loving, tea-guzzling unabashed Britishness of Mink's weather blog. And the design on the new gadgets blog is cool. We are suckers for a retro font. We will put the shopping one before a focus group of people with a greater income to dispose of than ours and get back to you.

But, sharp intake of breath, they do it for money. They probably blog in designer pyjamas. Not exactly keeping it real to the me, my cat, my libertarian ideology and my AK47 school of anti-establishment blogging, is it?

Factoid: Mink is the brainchild of Azeem Azhar.
