When are the May bank holidays and what is the weather forecast for May Day weekend?

May means two bank holidays - and this year the second national holiday will follow another change to the coronavirus lockdown rules which gives people more options for meeting friends and family.

This year's May Day Bank Holiday is on Monday, May 3.

Coronavirus restrictions in England mean friends and family from separate households will only be allowed to meet up outdoors to socialise, although that includes outside hospitality, like beer gardens and tables outside cafes.

Groups of up to six or a maximum of two households can gather, although those who do not live together are asked to maintain social distancing.

The second bank holiday next month falls on Monday May 31, known as the late spring bank holiday.

Unlike the May 3 bank holiday, on May 31 people from separate households are set to be allowed to meet up indoors as well as outdoors, with a rule of six/two households maximum limit inside, as the roadmap out of lockdown enters a new stage on Monday May 17.

Groups of 30 will be able to meet up outdoors and indoor venues like cinemas can reopen, which offers people more options for enjoying their May 31 Bank Holiday Monday.

There is also a chance that social distancing advice will be changed, to allow those from different households to hug each other - something families have waited a long time for.

When in May are the next bank holiday Mondays?

  • The first May bank holiday is on Monday May 3
  • There is another bank holiday on Monday May 31

What is the weather forecast for the May 3 bank holiday?

The recent warm spell does not look likely to be repeated over the bank holiday weekend, although early forecasts suggest it won't be a wash out either.

The Met Office's forecast for Newcastle over the bank holiday weekend predicts light showers between 10am and 7pm on Saturday May 1, with a maximum temperature of 9C. On Sunday the Met Office expects showers in the late morning, around 10am and more between 4pm and 10pm, with a maximum temperature of 9C.

Light showers are forecast between 10am and 7pm on Monday May 3, with a maximum temperature of around 10C.
