Venus, Saturn and Mars will align this week. getty

What To Watch For In The Night Sky This Week

Each Monday I pick out the northern hemisphere’s celestial highlights (mid-northern latitudes) for the week ahead, but be sure to check my main feed for more in-depth articles on stargazing, astronomy, eclipses and more.

What To Watch For In The Night Sky This Week: March 28-April 3, 2022

This week begins with a super-close and rare alignment of three planets —Venus, Saturn and Mars—in the pre-dawn night sky. You’ll need a good view to the east.

Look to the southeast before dawn and you’ll see a delicate 17%-lit crescent Moon beside a tight triangle of planets—Venus (the very bright one!), Mars and Saturn.

Tuesday, March 29: A planetary triangle and a 9% waning crescent Moon

The same view of the planets is available this morning, though the Moon will be more slender and lower in the sky—a beautiful sight on its own!

Wednesday and Thursday mornings also offer great views, but look east again this morning pre-dawn and you’ll see that Venus, Saturn and Mars have aligned.

Saturday, April 2, 2022: Three planets still align

That alignment is more or less visible this morning, though Saturn will have moved noticeably closer to Mars.

Sunday, April 3, 2022: Three planets align again

By now the alignment is still in play, but the gap between Venus and Saturn/Mars has dramatically widened.

Wishing you clear skies and wide eyes.
