A new three-part documentary revolving around the 1980s drug boom in Liverpool is coming to Sky Documentaries next week.
Each episode of 'Liverpool Narcos' focuses on a specific facet of what would become a multi-billion pound business.
The first episode - which premieres next Thursday at 9pm - is entitled 'Heroin' and interviews a major player from the time in the form of Michael Showers, the man referred to as 'The Boss'.
Showers was famously jailed for 20 years in 1991 after conspiring a route for £2m worth of heroin into the UK. The plot was thwarted in a police sting titled "Operation Rain Man" and is recreated in the documentary.
Away from his involvement in the drugs trade, Showers became a leading representative figure in the Liverpool 8 community, regularly marching for equal rights. He maintains his innocence to this day.
The series shows how Liverpool's docks became a gateway to the rest of the world and how they made the city the country's epicentre for drug smuggling. This, along with the rife unemployment, provided the perfect cocktail.
As well as the smugglers themselves, the documentary gains insight from customs and police detectives, as well as journalists, counselors, and addicts.
The first episode is entitled 'Heroin' airs next Thursday at 9pm; the second, 'Ecstasy', airs a week later on Thursday, June 10, and the third, 'Cocaine', airs on Saturday, June 19 at 10.45pm.
