As even the government pleads with car owners to get their Takata airbags fixed, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has designated May Airbag Recall Repair Month in Miami to encourage drivers of all models get their airbags fixed.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates recalled airbags sit in 1.3 million Florida cars, 450,000 of which are in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area. Cars with the Takata airbag problem are from model years 2003-2013.
"The need for repairs is urgent," a Fiat Chrysler release states. "When the inflators in these faulty airbags rupture, they could spray metal fragments into the vehicle, causing serious injury or even death. The risk of an inflator rupture increases in the heat and humidity common to Florida."
In addition to "street teams" trying to connect with drivers at local events and in areas with a high concentration of unrepaired airbags, many Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram dealers will keep service departments open longer. They'll also provide complimentary transportation if necessary during the repair, which usually takes an hour.
