Why does the Queen have two birthdays?

What is better than a birthday? Two, of course.

Many of us will be guilty of making our birthday a grand affair. Maybe making it a weekend long celebration or taking it into the next week.

Or let's go one better - a birthday month.

But maybe we should be taking a leaf out of Her Majesty's royal book as she has two birthdays.

Celebrations for the Queen's birthday have always been held on a day that is not actually her birth date.

According to the Royal website, celebrations to mark the Sovereigns' birthday have often been held on a day other than the actual birthday.

They cite King Edward VII as an example because he was actually born on November 9 but the occasion was publicly marked May or June.

But why?

Simple answer is the weather.

There is a greater chance that the sun will be shining, or at best be a little cloudy, in the summer months for the Birthday Parade which is also known as Trooping the Colour.

Back to the Queen, her actual birthday is April 21, which this year falls on Easter Sunday , when she will be turning the magnificent age of 93.

This date is usually celebrated privately with a 41 gun salute in Hyde Park, a 21 gun salute in Windsor Great Park and a 62 gun salute at the Tower of London.

However, Her Majesty will be celebrating her special day again on June 8 which is a more public spectacle alongside Trooping the Colour.

On this date she will be joined by other members of the Royal Family as the spectacular parade which goes from Buckingham Palace passing down The Mall and Horseguards' Parade before returning back to the Palace.

There is also usually a public appearance on the balcony by the Royal Family.

Happy Birthday your Majesty.
