'Whelming' is the new dating trend you need to be aware of

Navigating the dating scene is becoming harder and harder.

Singles looking to match with somebody online are often all too aware of dodgy dating trends to look out for.

And while you may have heard of, or been a victim of "ghosting", there's now another dating trend you can add to the never-ending list.

Ahead of Valentine's Day, new dating trend "whelming" is the latest term to be coined, and it's pretty awful, reports The Mirror.

According to the publication, whelming is when a potential match feels the need to tell you how many other matches they have, and just how overwhelming it is being so attractive and popular.

In fact, with so many egos out there, you've probably already been a subject of whelming, as it can be pretty subtle.

For example, it could be used as an excuse for a slow response, resulting in a reply such as "sorry, I'm just talking to so many people I can't keep track."

Or, perhaps they bring up a topic with you that you haven't discussed together, giving them an opportunity to point out they must have been discussing it with someone else.

Pretty irritating, isn't it?

It's thought some may do this in the hope that you'll try harder to win their affections, seeing as you don't feel like a priority to them.

Senior health editor at self.com Patia Braithwaite believes whelming is the new version of the old fashioned pick-up tactic "nagging."

It sees people giving backhanded compliments to throw your confidence off, with the hope of making you more attracted to them.
