Wheatley Group is appealing for businesses to donate food they can't sell to make up emergency parcels for people impacted by coronavirus.
The social housing provider hopes restaurants, cafes and other food outlets that have been forced to close will give surplus supplies to its Eat Well service for customers who are self-isolating and have a limited support network. The service, which delivers 500 parcels a week, is available to tenants of GHA, Cube and Loretto Housing in Glasgow.
Eat Well normally relies on surplus from supermarkets which have been left short of stock by recent panic buying. But many restaurants and cafes which were ordered to close abruptly had ordered food which may now go to waste. The project is particularly looking for fresh or tinned goods, cheese, milk, bread and butter.
Wheatley Group’s Pauline Thomson said: “We are doing everything we can to support our most vulnerable customers during this difficult time. OurEat Well service is a lifeline to people who have nowhere else to turn.
“We hope any business which has spare food – cafes, restaurants, distributors – will think of donating to us to support the people who most need our help.”
Wheatley staff will travel to pick up donations, with health and safety precautions in place for collections and deliveries to tenants’ homes. The organisation has also announced plans to make up to 300 empty homes available to local authorities as temporary accommodation for people experiencing homelessness.
