WhatsApp will stop working on these smartphone models on 31 December

Whether you're planning a night out, sharing some gossip or sending your mates some screenshots of a conversation you're having with your future husband, there's only one place to do it - WhatsApp.

There's no denying that the app has completely transformed the way in which we communicate with one another, and as such, has taken over text as the go-to way of messaging.

However, there's some bad news for WhatsApp fans, as it's just been revealed that the app will stop working on some popular smartphone apps later this month.

In a statement about the move, WhatsApp said: "You'll no longer be able to use all Windows Phone operating systems after December 31, 2019, and WhatsApp might not be available in the Microsoft Store after July 1, 2019."

As of 1 February 2019, people with Android versions 2.3.7 and older won't be able to create new accounts, or reverify existing accounts.

From the same date,  iPhones running on iOS 8 and older will also stop being able to create new accounts or reverify existing accounts.

If you have one of the affected handsets and don't want to lose your chats, you're advised to back up your WhatsApp messages so they won't be lost.

To do this, open the chat you want to save and click on 'Group Info'.

You'll then need to click 'Export Chat' - and you'll be given the option to download the chat with our without media.
