WhatsApp will stop working on some iPhone and Android smartphones from January 1

Popular messenger app WhatsApp will stop working on some models of smartphones from January 1.

Phones running older software will no longer be supported by the app on December 31, reports Birmingham Live.

WhatsApp will not be available on devices that are not running at least the iOS 9 or Android 4.0.3 operating systems.

If you have iPhones 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6S, all you have to do to get WhatsApp is to update your software to iOS 9.

But it means those with an iPhone 4 or below won't be able to upgrade to the latest software, and some much older Android phones will also be affected such as the Samsung Galaxy S2 that was released in 2011.

If you have a higher version of the software than iOS 9 or Android 4.0.3, you won't have any issues in the new year.

But those with much older devices won't be able to upgrade their software at all, and it may mean losing access to certain WhatsApp features on January 1.
