WhatsApp update could stop Android phone users making an embarrassing mistake

WhatsApp is working on an update for the Android version of its app that could stop users making an embarrassing mistake.

At the moment, when you send an image to a contact on WhatsApp , a small icon appears at the top of the screen displaying the contact's profile picture.

This icon is so small that it can be easy to mistake your intended recipient for someone else - which could be very embarrassing if the image is, ahem, intimate in nature.

Luckily, WhatsApp is working on an update that will display the name of the recipient at the bottom of the screen, as well as the profile picture.

This means you can be absolutely sure you've got the right person before you hit "send".

While the update is only for available Android, iPhone users need not worry, as the recipient's name already appears at the bottom of the screen in iOS.

The update is therefore just bringing the Android version of the app into line with the iOS version.

The new feature was first spotted by WABetaInfo , which trawls beta versions of the app for clues about forthcoming features.

A screenshot of the new feature shows how the contact's name will appear below the image.

This will work for groups, as well as individual contacts, according to WABetaInfo.

It's not clear when WhatsApp plans to officially release the Android update, but it will be included in version 2.19.173 of the app, which is currently in beta testing.
