WhatsApp to 'stop working on millions of older smart phones on New Year's Day'

WhatsApp is to stop working for millions of older smart phone users on New Year's Day.

The messaging app will no longer support iOS 9 systems, the operating software released by Apple in 2015.

Android users with older devices will also be affected if they use Android 4.0.3.

Software update iOS 9 was the last the iPhone 4 could receive, with later models able to upgrade to newer versions.

This year, Apple released iOS 14 in September 2020.

Devices 4S, 5, 5S, 5C, 6 and 6S can all be updated in order to keep using WhatsApp on their device, reports the Daily Mail

The move to block services on older handsets is a common tactic of app developers to frees up resources to be focused on improving the product for the majority of users who have more modern handsets.

Facebook-owned WhatsApp is one of the world's most popular apps, with an estimated two billion users.

Phones which can no longer be updated to a supporting system are expected to lose their ability to use WhatsApp on the first day of 2021.

The Mirror Online has approached WhatsApp for a comment.
