WhatsApp to roll out new group privacy settings and this is how it works

WhatsApp has just announced the rollout of new privacy settings to help you decide who can add you to random WhatsApp groups.

Until recently, the chat app gave no individual autonomy over who can add you to any WhatsApp group.

This meant anyone from your contact list could add you to any group chat without your permission, reports the Mirror.

A spokesperson for WhatsApp explained: "As people turn to groups for important conversations, users have asked for more control over their experience.

"Today, we're introducing a new privacy setting and invite system to help you decide who can add you to groups."

How to set up new permissions

You can enable these new permissions in the Settings section of the app, then go to Account > Privacy > Groups.

There, you'll find three options - Everyone, My Contacts or My Contacts Except.

My Contacts means allowing the users you have in your contacts to add you to a group, whereas My Contacts Except lets you choose particular users you'd prefer were unable to add you.

WhatsApp have also added: "In those cases, an admin who can't add you to a group will be prompted to send a private invite through an individual chat, giving you the choice of joining the group.

"You'll have three days to accept the invite before it expires."

The update is now available on both iOS and Android.
